Ag Career Spotlight: Farm and Country Home Loan Officer

Lindsay Phillips is currently the Country Home Loan Officer in the Maysville office. She started her career with Farm Credit Mid-America as a Financial Services Officer (FSO) two and a half years ago.  Prior to her current role, Lindsay was a loan officer for the Buffalo Trace Area Development District and worked at a local bank.

Lindsay’s primary responsibilities include working with customers looking for lending on rural and farm-based homes, a job where building personal relationships is critical. In fact, she says that is the best part about her job.

“I like to help area farmers and rural residents,” said Lindsay. “A lot of my customers are people that have jobs in town but still farm on the side. I can relate to them very easily.”

Lindsay and her husband Keith raise and show beef cattle, and are parents to two children.  She was involved in 4-H and FFA as a child, and she knew she wanted to have a career in agriculture, which led her to study agriculture business at Morehead StateUniversity.

“My ag background helps me understand that farm people have a different lifestyle,” said Lindsay.

When asked about what additional education or experience she would need for a career in agriculture lending and finance, she said she would have looked at internships for job experience and networking opportunities. Customer service skills, however, is what she said are most important.

“You definitely need to be a people person,” said Lindsay. “There are a lot of different personalities and you need to find an easy way to communicate with them.

“The only thing I didn’t think about prior to having this career, is being able to say no to people. We aren’t always going to be able to help a customer, and the way you tell them is a big part of it. But you can talk with them and work with them so they can make improvements and ask again in a year or so,” she continued.

Lindsay says that Farm Credit Mid-America is a wonderful place to work.  She loves that she gets to help a lot of farmers, agribusinesses and rural residents in her community.
